The narrative begins with Skynet launching a new threat: the T-X, sent back to eliminate John Connor's close associates to isolate him before he can lead the resistance. The Resistance sends back a reprogrammed T-850 to protect John and his future wife, Kate Brewster, who works at an animal hospital. The T-X kills its other targets and can assume the appearance of other people; it kills Kate's fiancé and impersonates him. The group travels to the Cyber Research Systems base where Kate's father, Lieutenant General Robert Brewster, supervises the development of Skynet, but arrives too late to stop him from activating it. At Crystal Peak the Terminator uses his last hydrogen fuel cell to destroy both himself and the T-X. Crystal Peak turns out to be a fallout shelter rather than Skynet's core: Skynet is software spread through cyberspace, and Judgment Day could not be stopped.
