The Current
A song about urban isolation and technology's paradox.
The Current, a track from Blue Man Group’s 2003 album The Complex, served as its first single. Featuring Gavin Rossdale on vocals, the song appeared in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. After striking a deal with the film’s producers, a crew member recommended Rossdale for his vocal range. Rossdale approved the song and could hit its notes, so Blue Man Group flew to London to record him, also bringing in Bush guitarist Chris Traynor.

Song meaning
The song addresses urban and occupational isolation, two key themes from the album. Its setting is the underground portion of the urban complex, where phone lines, electrical wires, and Internet connections are located. The Blue Man Group stated they wanted to capture the modern paradox of having access to millions of people through electric current while being cut off from real human contact. The song may be interpreted as reflecting how technology advances the world yet moves people backward.
