While Skynet sent a machine to kill Sarah Connor before she could conceive John, the Resistance sent Kyle Reese to protect her. This event created a predestination paradox: the very actions taken to prevent the rise of Skynet were the catalysts that ensured its creation and the birth of its greatest enemy.

Reader's Guide

The machine's directive is absolute: locate and terminate every woman named Sarah Connor until the true target is found, erasing John Connor before his birth can occur. In response, John Connor sends back his own operative, Kyle Reese, to save her. His mission is singular: protect Sarah Connor at all costs. Reese intercepts the machine's path, leading to a chaotic confrontation that ignites a high-speed chase across Los Angeles.

The Terminator tracks Sarah to a nightclub, where Reese fires on it first; after a chaotic gunfight he escapes with Sarah in a stolen car. This displacement event triggers an irreversible chain reaction. Sarah's transformation from ordinary civilian to hardened warrior begins here, driven by the revelation of her destiny. The Terminator is finally destroyed in a hydraulic press, but its damaged CPU and right arm are recovered by Cyberdyne and become the basis for the later work on Skynet.
