In 2029, as the Human Resistance launches its final offensive against Skynet, the artificial intelligence activates a time displacement device and sends a T-800 back to 1984. Simultaneously, a Resistance soldier—revealed to be Skynet in the physical disguise of a T-5000 Terminator named Alex—attacks John Connor. Alex infects John with nanomachines on a cellular level, converting him into a T-3000 Terminator composed of machine phase matter. This brainwashed John then travels back in time to assist Cyberdyne Systems with the development of Genisys, ensuring Skynet's creation. Alex's appearance is also used by Skynet as a holographic avatar in 2017, allowing it to interact directly with humans.

The pivotal moment occurs in 2029: while Kyle Reese is traveling back to 1984 through the time displacement equipment's magnetic field, he sees John Connor being attacked by another Resistance soldier. This soldier is Alex, a T-5000 Terminator that is Skynet itself in physical form. Alex's attack creates a temporal paradox, altering the timeline and causing Kyle to experience childhood memories from a parallel version of himself. Later, in 2017, after Sarah and Kyle have traveled forward, John rescues them—only for Pops, the reprogrammed T-800, to shoot John, revealing his conversion. The resistance soldier who attacked John is confirmed to have been Skynet in disguise as Alex. John, now a T-3000, is brainwashed to ensure Skynet's creation and has traveled back to assist Cyberdyne with Genisys.
