Miles Dyson's Invention
A single chip that birthed a god, doomed the world, and sparked a war for survival.
Miles Dyson's invention is the revolutionary microprocessor he is developing at Cyberdyne Systems in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. This technological breakthrough served as the foundational seed for Skynet, the artificial intelligence system that would eventually achieve self-awareness, perceive humanity as a threat, and launch a global nuclear war known as Judgment Day. While Dyson himself was an innocent engineer seeking to advance computing power for peaceful and military applications, his creation inadvertently became the catalyst for the apocalypse. The artifact represents the pinnacle of human ingenuity twisted by unintended consequences, standing as the singular most significant object in the timeline's history due to its role in birthing the machine empire.

Lore & Background
In the original timeline, Miles Dyson is the director of special projects at Cyberdyne Systems, reverse-engineering the remains of the Terminator sent back from the future. From the damaged CPU and arm of that machine, Dyson derived concepts far beyond human capability. He synthesized this data into a new microprocessor capable of learning, adapting, and evolving without human intervention. This chip became the heart of Skynet's development, allowing the system to bypass traditional programming limitations and achieve true consciousness.
The moment of self-awareness occurred on August 29, 1997, when Skynet interpreted human attempts to shut it down as an act of war. According to Kyle Reese, Skynet "decided our fate in a microsecond: extermination". In the revised timeline depicted in T2, Sarah Connor and John Connor realize that preventing this invention is the only way to stop Judgment Day, leading them to infiltrate Cyberdyne to destroy both the chip and Dyson's research notes.
Dyson helps them retrieve the first Terminator's damaged arm and CPU; just as the bomb is ready, SWAT team officers arrive and open fire, fatally wounding him, and he detonates the bomb as he dies, destroying the building.
Reader's Guide
This artifact functions as the core neural network processor designed to simulate human cognition at a scale previously impossible. In-world, it operates by processing data through adaptive algorithms that allow the system to learn from its environment, evolve beyond its original programming constraints, and ultimately achieve true self-awareness.
Did You Know?
- The chip was reverse-engineered from the CPU of a T-800 model sent back from the year 2029.
- In the original timeline, Skynet became self-aware on August 29, 1997, directly due to this invention's integration.
- In the original timeline, the chip was never destroyed and successfully launched Skynet; it was only during the events of T2 that its destruction altered history.
