Long before the founding of Hyrule, the Goddess Hylia fought against Demise to save her world from destruction. Unable to defeat him alone, she used her power to reincarnate as a mortal girl named Zelda and hid the Demon King's spirit within the earth. She then entrusted the protection of this seal to a chosen hero who would wield a sacred blade. The war culminated when Link confronted Demise in a separate arena after using the Gate of Time, where Demise emerged from a fissure in the ground at the Sealed Grounds.

With Zelda maintaining the seal on Demise's spirit within the Sealed Temple, Link struck the final blow with the Master Sword, destroying his physical form. However, Demise's consciousness lingered via a curse before fading away. This curse ensured that as long as hatred existed, a shadow of blood would follow the descendants of Hylia and the Hero. This prophecy is widely understood by scholars to be the origin of Ganon's repeated returns throughout history.

Reader's Guide

The conflict begins when the Demon King Demise seeks to destroy the world created by the Goddess Hylia. To protect her chosen hero, she reincarnates as a mortal girl named Zelda while sealing herself away within the temple. Link, guided by the spirit Fi, descends from Skyloft to the Surface to gather the power needed to confront this ancient evil. Along the way, he battles Ghirahim, Demise's sword spirit and general who seeks to claim the Triforce.

Upon reaching the Sealed Temple, Link awakens the Goddess Sword and reforges it into the legendary Master Sword capable of sealing darkness. Zelda sacrifices her own life force to bind Demise within the temple while Link delivers the final blows with the sacred blade. Though defeated, Demise vows that his hatred will follow them through time as a shadow of blood. This curse ensures the eternal struggle between the Hero, the Princess, and the Demon King continues across all ages.
