Lore & Background
The Twili descend from the Interlopers, who used powerful magic in a war over the Triforce and the Sacred Realm; the Golden Goddesses had the Light Spirits seal that magic in the Fused Shadow and banished the Interlopers to the Twilight Realm. Its ruler Midna was overthrown by Zant, who turned the Twili into Shadow Beasts. Link and Midna clear the twilight from Hyrule and defeat Zant.
