Twilight Realm
A corrupted parallel dimension where Hyrule's light fades and only shadows remain.
The Twilight Realm is a corrupted parallel dimension that engulfs parts of Hyrule during the events of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Originally an alternate home for the Twili people, it becomes a void where sunlight cannot exist, turning inhabitants into invisible spirits except for Link and Zelda. This shadowy world serves as the primary setting for much of the game's conflict, introduced when Link is pulled beyond a wall of Twilight by a monster in Faron Woods. It is here that Link first transforms into a wolf, unable to use his sword or shield, forced to rely on biting, dodging, and his enhanced senses to survive.

Lore & Background
The Twilight Realm exists as an alternate timeline from The Wind Waker, taking place over a century after Ocarina of Time. It is the domain of the Twili, a race banished there in ancient times by the Sages for attempting to misuse the Triforce's power. In Twilight Princess, the realm is ruled by Zant, the usurper king who forged a pact with Ganondorf to subjugate Hyrule. Zant invaded Hyrule Castle, forcing Princess Zelda to surrender and allowing the Twilight to envelop the kingdom. The true ruler of the Twili is actually Midna, an imp-like creature cursed into her small form by Zant after he usurped her throne. When Link defeats Zant in Hyrule, Midna recovers the Fused Shadows—fragments of a powerful relic needed to match Zant's power—and kills him. With Ganondorf defeated, the Light Spirits revive Midna, restoring her to her true form before she returns home.
In Their Own Story
Link first enters the Twilight Realm when he is pulled beyond a wall of Twilight in Faron Woods, transforming into a wolf and imprisoned. He is freed by Midna, who guides him to Princess Zelda to learn that Zant has forced the kingdom under Twilight's control. To save Hyrule, Link must enter Twilight-covered regions to revive the Light Spirits, which return him to his Hylian form and reveal the location of Fused Shadows. Later, after obtaining the Master Sword, Link and Midna travel to the Gerudo Desert to find the Mirror of Twilight, the only gateway between the worlds. They discover it shattered by Zant, who tried to destroy it but failed. The Sages explain that only the true ruler of the Twili can completely destroy the mirror. After retrieving the shards and restoring the mirror, Link confronts Zant, learns of his pact with Ganondorf, and defeats him. Midna kills Zant after realizing only Ganondorf's defeat can release her from her curse. In the final battle against Ganondorf in Hyrule Castle, Midna uses the Fused Shadows to hold him off as the castle collapses. After Link runs the Master Sword through Ganondorf's chest, the Light Spirits restore Midna to her true form. She bids farewell to Link and Zelda before returning to the Twilight Realm and destroying the Mirror of Twilight, severing the link between the two worlds forever.
Reader's Guide
The Twilight Realm is accessed through Twilight portals that appear when Hyrule is partially engulfed by corruption. In these zones, Link transforms into a wolf, losing his ability to use weapons but gaining speed, digging abilities, and enhanced senses to follow scent trails and detect spirits. As Wolf Link, he carries Midna on his back; she provides hints, uses an energy field to attack enemies, helps him jump long distances, and eventually allows warping to preset locations across the overworld. The realm features nine dungeons where Link battles enemies, solves puzzles, and defeats bosses to obtain items or advance the plot. Key artifacts like the Fused Shadows are hidden within these Twilight zones and must be collected to confront Zant. The Mirror of Twilight serves as the gateway between Hyrule and the Twilight Realm; once restored after being shattered into fragments by Zant, it allows travel between worlds until Midna destroys it at the game's conclusion to prevent future invasions.
