Lore & Background

Centuries ago, the Picori race trapped the world's evils in a chest using the Picori Blade and the Light Force. Vaati, once an apprentice to a Minish sage, stole the Mage's Cap—a hat capable of granting wishes—and used it to become a powerful sorcerer. Fascinated by evil, he sought the Light Force but was unable to find it initially, leading him to turn Zelda to stone during the Picori Festival after destroying the blade. Vaati eventually trapped his former master, Ezlo, inside the Mage's Cap itself. His obsession with power drove him to brainwash King Daltus and take control of Hyrule Castle. When Link restored the Four Sword using the Four Elements, Vaati learned that the Light Force resided within Princess Zelda. Spying on them, he siphoned this force to become all-powerful before transforming into a demonic form for his final battle against Link.

In Their Own Story

At the Picori Festival, Vaati, the sword fighting champion, destroyed the Picori Blade and opened the chest containing the world's evils, releasing monsters across Hyrule. Failing to find the Light Force he sought, he turned Princess Zelda to stone and fled. King Daltus ordered Link to find the Minish people to reforge the sword. Link traveled to Minish Woods, met Ezlo, and gained the ability to shrink to Minish size. After retrieving the Four Elements and restoring the blade into the Four Sword, Vaati overheard that the Light Force was passed down through princesses. He siphoned it from Zelda, becoming all-powerful. Link confronted him in Hyrule Castle; despite Vaati's transformation into a demonic form, Link defeated him, freeing Ezlo and restoring Zelda.

Reader's Guide

Vaati serves as the central villain in The Minish Cap, acting as both a mastermind and a physical threat. He begins by destroying the Picori Blade at the festival, turning Zelda to stone, and brainwashing King Daltus. Players must navigate Link's shrinking mechanic to solve puzzles and collect items like the Mole Mitts, Gust Jar, and Cane of Pacci to progress. Key turning points include Ezlo revealing his backstory as a Minish sage trapped by Vaati, the retrieval of the Four Elements to restore the Picori Blade into the Four Sword, and the revelation that Zelda holds the Light Force. The final confrontation occurs in Hyrule Castle after Vaati siphons the Light Force from Zelda, transforming into a demonic form before being vanquished by Link.
