Fi
The spirit of the Goddess Sword who guides Link with precise hints.
Fi is the spirit residing within the Goddess Sword, later known as the Master Sword, in *The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword*. She accompanies Link throughout his journey to rescue his childhood friend Zelda and defeat the Demon King Demise. Unlike cryptic guides found in other entries, Fi communicates with direct clarity, offering hints about environmental elements and enemy characteristics when summoned during combat or exploration. Her presence is central to the gameplay loop, as she provides specific data on weaknesses and objectives. Fi's role is strictly tied to Link's progression from Skyloft down to the three Surface overworlds: Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano, and Lanayru Desert.

Lore & Background
Fi exists as a conscious entity within the sword that Link draws from the statue of Hylia on Skyloft. This event marks the beginning of Link's role as the prophesied hero destined to destroy Demise. Throughout the adventure, Fi aids Link by analyzing enemies and providing tactical information. When an enemy is targeted and Fi is summoned, she explicitly states their characteristics and weaknesses. She guides Link across the Surface regions accessed through columns of light in the clouds. Her guidance is essential for locating Sacred Flames needed to purify the Goddess Sword into the Master Sword. While she assists with puzzles and combat strategies, her nature remains that of a tool for the hero, bound to the sword until the main quest concludes.
In Their Own Story
Link first encounters Fi after passing his final exam as a knight-in-training, when Zelda is whisked away below the clouds by a dark tornado. Leading Link into the statue of Hylia, she resides within the Goddess Sword. As Link navigates Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano, and Lanayru Desert to track Zelda, Fi remains his constant companion at his side. She guides him to the Sealed Temple where he meets an old woman and encounters Ghirahim. During battles against the Imprisoned or in dungeons, Fi activates when Link targets enemies to reveal their weaknesses. When Link defends Zelda and Impa from Ghirahim at the Temple of Time, she continues her advisory role.
Reader's Guide
Fi functions as an in-game assistant that players summon by targeting enemies or specific environmental elements. When active, she provides immediate feedback on enemy weaknesses and highlights objectives relevant to the current context. This mechanic is vital for combat efficiency, as enemies are designed to anticipate and block Link's attacks, requiring precise knowledge of their vulnerabilities. Fi also assists with puzzle-solving by scanning areas via the Dowsing function, which switches to a first-person view to locate selected objects. New Dowsing objectives appear depending on the game context, often guiding players toward hidden items or switches. Her utility extends to navigating the overworlds and dungeons, ensuring players can progress through the story's linear path by identifying necessary steps.
