Lore & Background
In The Wind Waker young Rito, called Fledglings, are born without wings; on reaching a certain age they climb the volcano to the Sky Spirit Valoo, whose scale lets them grow wings. In Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom they live in northwest Hyrule, cope with cold climates, look much more bird-like and fly using updrafts. Their societies are led by elders, including Teba in Tears of the Kingdom; Revali, the Rito Champion, is among their best-known members.
