Ghirahim's true nature is revealed only after he is defeated in battle. He turns out to be the spirit of Demise's sword, a manifestation created to serve his master's return. His entire existence revolves around the ritualistic resurrection of Demise, which requires using Zelda as a sacrifice. When Link defeats him at the climax of the story, Ghirahim is unable to prevent Zelda from being used to reincarnate Demise's humanoid form. This outcome highlights his role not as an independent villain with personal ambitions, but as a functional component of Demise's plan. Once Demise is successfully brought back, Ghirahim's purpose is fulfilled and he ceases to exist as an individual entity.

In Their Own Story

Ghirahim first intervenes after Link defends Zelda and Impa at the Temple of Time in the Lanayru Desert. He attacks the group, forcing Zelda and Impa to escape through a Gate of Time into the past while leaving him behind. Later, Ghirahim arrives after Link uses the Triforce to destroy Demise in the present timeline. In this final confrontation, he kidnaps Zelda, intending to use her as a sacrifice to resurrect his master despite Demise's death in the current era. He leads Link into the past, where they fight through his army before engaging in a final duel. Upon defeat, Ghirahim reveals he is the spirit of Demise's sword but cannot stop the ritual. Zelda is used to reincarnate Demise's humanoid form, and Ghirahim is absorbed or discarded as his master returns.
