Ghirahim is a self-proclaimed Demon Lord serving as a primary antagonist in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. He works directly towards freeing the ancient Demon King Demise, acting as his devoted servant throughout Link's journey. Ghirahim first appears at the Skyview Temple, and later kidnaps Zelda from the Temple of Time. Unlike other foes who operate in the shadows, he actively pursues Link across the regions of Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano, and Lanayru Desert to fulfill his mission. His presence is defined by a theatrical demeanor that masks a ruthless determination to use Zelda as a sacrifice to resurrect Demise, driving the narrative conflict forward.

Ghirahim's true nature is revealed only after he is defeated in battle. He turns out to be the spirit of Demise's sword, a manifestation created to serve his master's return. His entire existence revolves around the ritualistic resurrection of Demise, which requires using Zelda as a sacrifice. When Link defeats Ghirahim, the demon lord succeeds in using Zelda to resurrect Demise, and Ghirahim completes the ritual even in defeat. Ghirahim's existence ends when Demise is defeated in the past, after which Ghirahim fades away.
