War of the Five Kings

Five kings clashed, burning the realm until only ash and survivors remained.

The War of the Five Kings tore the Seven Kingdoms apart. Following King Robert Baratheon’s death, five men simultaneously claimed the throne or independence: Joffrey Baratheon backed by Lannister gold and steel; Stannis and Renly Baratheon, divided between Dragonstone and Storm's End; Robb Stark, crowned King in the North; and Balon Greyjoy, reclaiming the Iron Islands. What began as a dispute over legitimacy spiraled into a continent-wide conflict, drawing in foreign alliances and awakening threats older than the realm.

Lore & Background

Beyond the politics of succession lay a struggle for physical survival. Armies ravaged the Riverlands until harvest failed; plague stalked King’s Landing as famine gripped the countryside. The war drew in distant powers—the Martells plotted in Dorne, while Daenerys Targaryen gathered strength across the Narrow Sea to reclaim her birthright. As the living fought over a chair of swords, winter approached with its own vengeance. Famine and cold compounded the carnage wrought by steel, all while ancient horrors thawed in the far North, waiting for a realm too broken to stop them.

Reader's Guide

Eddard Stark’s discovery of King Joffrey’s true parentage sparked the chaos. Arrested and executed, his death drove Robb Stark to crown himself King in the North. Simultaneously, Stannis Baratheon claimed legitimacy as Robert's heir from Dragonstone, while Renly rallied the Stormlands with a rival claim. Balon Greyjoy exploited the distraction to seize the Iron Islands.

The war turned on betrayal and blood. The Tyrells abandoned Renly’s corpse to ally with the Lannisters, repelling Stannis at the Battle of the Blackwater with wildfire and steel. Robb Stark won every field battle in the Riverlands until Walder Frey and Roose Bolton butchered his army at the Twins—the Red Wedding that ended the Northern campaign. Stannis pushed north only to freeze against House Bolton’s defenses and starvation, while Euron Greyjoy murdered Balon to claim the Salt Throne. The conflict exhausted Westeros, leaving it defenseless as winter fell.
