Heartsbane is the Valyrian steel sword of House Tarly of Horn Hill. Samwell Tarly, the elder son of Lord Randyll Tarly, was forced to give up his birthright and join the Night's Watch so that his younger brother Dickon could inherit.

Lore & Background

In the television series Sam brings Gilly and Little Sam to Horn Hill on his way to the Citadel. At dinner Randyll mocks his son's lack of fighting skill, and Gilly's defence of Sam reveals both that he killed a White Walker and that she is a wildling. Randyll lets them stay as servants but bans Sam from ever returning.

Reader's Guide

Daenerys Targaryen later executes Randyll and Dickon for refusing to swear fealty to her. As Winterfell prepares for the army of the dead, Sam gives Heartsbane to Jorah Mormont to carry into the battle.

Sam instead takes Gilly and the baby with him to Oldtown, stealing Heartsbane from Horn Hill as he leaves.
