When King Robert Baratheon visits Winterfell, Sansa happily accepts her betrothal to Joffrey. In King's Landing, she lies to protect Joffrey after he attacks Mycah, resulting in the death of her direwolf, Lady. Devastated by her father's arrest and subsequent execution, which she witnesses while forced to look at his tarred head, Sansa learns to feign loyalty to avoid severe beatings. She saves Ser Dontos Hollard during a name day celebration, winning his allegiance. During the Battle of Blackwater Bay, she shelters in the Red Keep with other highborn ladies; when Cersei flees, Sandor Clegane offers to take her away, but she declines. Following Joffrey's death and Margaery Tyrell's arrival, Sansa is married to Tyrion Lannister. Joffrey taunts her during the ceremony, commanding Ser Dontos to act as a stool for the cloak ritual. Tyrion intervenes when Joffrey threatens to rape her at the wedding banquet.

Fans should note that in the books, Sansa is not present in A Dance with Dragons but is expected in The Winds of Winter. Her character draws heavily from Elizabeth of York, sharing traits like being a northern noblewoman who becomes a dynastic key after her father's death and brothers' disappearance.
