House Baratheon

Ours is the Fury: the stag lords of the Stormlands who took the throne.

House Baratheon is the youngest of the great houses of the Seven Kingdoms and the principal house of the Stormlands. It was founded by Orys, said to be the bastard half-brother of the first Targaryen king.

Its arms show a black stag on a field of gold, with a crown added after Robert Baratheon took the Iron Throne, and its words are Ours is the Fury. Bastards born in the Stormlands take the surname Storm.

Reader's Guide

Under Robert the house holds the crown while his younger brothers rule its other seats: the brooding Stannis on Dragonstone and Renly at the ancestral seat of Storm's End.

Robert, called the Usurper, is king at the start of A Game of Thrones. A ward of Jon Arryn raised at the Eyrie beside Eddard Stark, he was betrothed to Ned's sister Lyanna, and after she disappeared with Rhaegar Targaryen he killed Rhaegar and seized the throne.
