Daenerys Acquires Dragons

Three stone eggs, one pyre, and the first dragons in a century.

At her wedding to Khal Drogo, Daenerys Targaryen is given three petrified dragon eggs by Illyrio Mopatis. They hatch at the end of A Game of Thrones, after she has lost both her husband and her unborn child.

Lore & Background

Drogo is wounded in a fight and the enslaved Lhazareen priestess Mirri Maz Duur dresses the cut, but the wound festers. In desperation Daenerys asks her to heal Drogo with blood magic; the priestess betrays her, the ritual costs Daenerys her unborn son and leaves Drogo in a catatonic state, and Daenerys ends his life.

At daybreak she emerges unburned with three newly hatched dragons, whom she names Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion. The dragons give her a tactical advantage and a prestige that shape the rest of her story.

Refusing to join the widows of the dosh khaleen, she has Mirri tied to Drogo's funeral pyre, lays the three eggs on his body and walks into the flames.
