Casterly Rock is the ancestral seat of House Lannister, one of the seven major noble houses in Westeros. It lies in the Westerlands, beside Lannisport, the chief town of the region and one of the great ports of Westeros.

Seven relatively stable feudal kingdoms were forged across Westeros over thousands of years. One of these was the Kingdom of the Rock, ruled by House Lannister of Casterly Rock. Three hundred years before the novels begin, Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys invaded the Westerosi mainland with three fire-breathing dragons. Their armies subdued six of the Seven Kingdoms through conquest or treaty.
