The sword was reforged after the death of Balerion, the last great dragon to die in Westeros. Aegon I believed that wielding a blade made from his mount's remains would channel the beast's fire into his conquests. For generations, it remained at Dragonstone or the Red Keep, passed down through legitimate Targaryen heirs as a symbol of their power. The legacy shifted dramatically when the Unworthy King Aegon IV legitimized his bastards and gifted Blackfyre to Daemon. This act was seen by many as an insult to the royal line, suggesting that blood mattered less than favor. Daemon used the sword to lead the first rebellion against King Daeron II, establishing a rival dynasty that would plague the realm for decades. The final known owner was Maelys Blackfyre, who carried the blade into his last stand at the Stepstones. During the Battle of Bloodstone Point, he was slain by Ser Dickon Tarly.
