The Long Night

The Long Night was a winter that lasted a generation, about eight thousand years before the War of the Five Kings. Crops were buried under snow and thousands starved, and the White Walkers came south from the Land of Always Winter to attack the living. The White Walkers had been created by the Children of the Forest as a weapon against the First Men, but they slipped out of their makers' control.
