The Night's Watch serves as the guardian order defending the northern border of the Seven Kingdoms, stationed at a massive magical wall of ice. This ancient brotherhood dedicates its members to life-long service, protecting Westeros from human raiders known as wildlings and mythical enemies called the Others. By the time King Robert Baratheon ruled, the order had lost much of its former prestige, with recruits drawn largely from convicts and outcasts rather than noble knights.

Leadership rests with a Lord Commander elected by the brothers for life; in the novel's timeline, Jeor Mormont holds this title. Their existence is rooted in an ancient pact to defend against the Others, an inhuman race from beyond the ice. While the southern kingdoms often forget this threat, the Watch remains vigilant, even as their ranks dwindle to include only those with nowhere else to go.

Reader's Guide

Members serve for life and are forbidden from marrying or holding political power. The order operates independently of southern kings, governed by an elected Lord Commander. Historically, the Watch maintained three castles along the Wall, but by the novel's events, only Castle Black remains active.
