Lore & Background

George R. R. Martin was inspired by a visit to Hadrian's Wall near the border of England and Scotland, where he wondered how a Roman soldier would feel facing unknown threats from the north. In 1991 he set out to write a story about the people guarding the end of the world.

Reader's Guide

In Martin's words, the things that come out of his fictional north are far more terrifying than Scotsmen or Picts.
