Production
Series creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss served as showrunners for the seventh season. Directing duties were handled by Jeremy Podeswa (episodes 1 and 7), Mark Mylod (episodes 2 and 3), Matt Shakman (episodes 4 and 5), and Alan Taylor (episode 6). Taylor returned to the series after an absence since the second season, while Shakman directed Game of Thrones for the first time. Costume designer Michele Clapton returned after spending time away from the show in the sixth season; she had previously worked on the first five seasons and the end of the sixth.
The season contained original material not found in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, with some elements revealed to the writers during discussions with Martin. Filming began on August 31, 2016, at Titanic Studios in Belfast and concluded in February 2017. The start of filming was delayed to later in the year due to necessary weather conditions; the showrunners explained that winter had arrived in the story, requiring grim, gray weather even in sunnier filming locations.
Girona, Spain, which had stood in for Braavos and parts of King's Landing, did not return as a filming location. The season filmed in Northern Ireland, Spain, and Iceland, with Northern Ireland production beginning in August 2016. Spanish locations included Seville, Cáceres, Almodóvar del Río, Santiponce, Zumaia, and Bermeo, as well as Muriola Beach in Barrika, Las Atarazanas, the Royal Dockyards of Seville, and the shores of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
The series returned to The Dark Hedges in Stranocum, previously used as the Kingsroad in the second season. Some scenes were filmed in Iceland, and filming also occurred in Dubrovnik, Croatia, for King's Landing. The scene where Arya was reunited with Nymeria was filmed in Alberta, Canada.
