Lore & Background
Before the Andals, the First Men had taken up the nature religion of the Children of the Forest, whose gods became known as the Old Gods. The Andals, Iron Age settlers from Essos, invaded and brought the Faith of the Seven with them; the First Men kingdoms south of the Neck fell one by one, and only the North held out.
Reader's Guide
In the television series the High Sparrow, played by Jonathan Pryce, is given power as a religious leader in King's Landing; his Faith Militant and its clash with Cersei Lannister are covered on the Faith Militant page.
Oldtown, the oldest city of Westeros and home of the maesters' Citadel, was once the religious seat of the Faith. House Arryn of the Vale is among the oldest lines of Andal nobility. The ironborn follow a different god altogether, the Drowned God.
