Background
Melisandre sets the Dothraki's arakhs alight, but the Dothraki, Jorah and Ghost are quickly overwhelmed when they charge. The wights smother the fire in the trench around Winterfell with their bodies, and a wight giant breaks the walls before Lyanna Mormont kills it as it crushes her.
Written by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and directed by Miguel Sapochnik, it drew praise for Arya's storyline, direction and score, and criticism for its handling of the White Walkers and its lighting. It received eleven Emmy nominations and was the final episode for Theon, Jorah, Melisandre and the Night King.
Jon and Daenerys fail to bring down the Night King, and the undead Viserion blocks Jon's way to the godswood. There Theon defends Bran to the last and charges the Night King, who kills him with his own spear. As the Night King draws his sword on Bran, Arya leaps at him with the Valyrian steel dagger.
