Astapor is the oldest city in Slaver's Bay, on the banks of the slow, crooked Worm River. When Daenerys arrives at the start of A Storm of Swords she finds an ancient, decaying city long past its glory.

Everything is built of red brick: its stepped pyramids, fighting pits, streets, walls and the Plaza of Pride. Arstan Whitebeard explains the saying "Brick and blood built Astapor" as a reference to the slaves who make the bricks.
