Lore & Background

Arya first meets Jaqen H'ghar as a prisoner locked in a wagon cage. At Harrenhal he offers to kill any three people she names, and she forces his help in freeing the northern prisoners by naming Jaqen himself as the third. Before leaving he gives her a Braavosi iron coin to ensure her induction into his guild, the Faceless Men, and tells her to remember the phrase "Valar Morghulis" ("All men must die" in High Valyrian).

Reader's Guide

Braavos, the guild's home city, has its own page in this codex.

Arya later gains passage to Braavos on the galleass Titan's Daughter by showing the captain the iron coin and saying "Valar Morghulis." At the House of Black and White she is initiated by a priest she calls "the Kindly Man", and she serves the House blind for half a year.
