The Authority's realm is the Kingdom of Heaven, which he ruled from the Clouded Mountain, a floating mobile city believed by many to be Heaven. The Authority was the first angel to come into existence, condensed from Dust, and he led other angels, and later humanity, to believe that he was the creator of the multiverse. This claim legitimised his taking political power in the Kingdom of Heaven.

Lore & Background
The angel Xaphania found out the truth about him and was banished from the Kingdom; she and other angels later started a rebellion. As the Authority grew older and weaker, the Mountain became more and more obscured by clouds. In his old age he appointed the archangel Metatron to act as regent of the Kingdom of Heaven, and Metatron eventually grew more powerful than his master. The Authority also turned the Land of the Dead into a prison for all the dead, with harpies in his employment guarding the ghosts.
Reader's Guide
Lord Asriel allies with 'fallen' angels such as Xaphania in an attempt to overthrow the divine monarchy and replace it with a Republic of Heaven. During the final battle, the Authority is carried away from the Clouded Mountain on the orders of Metatron, imprisoned in a crystal box that keeps him alive but trapped. Lyra and Will free him with the Subtle Knife, not knowing he is too weak to survive outside it. Metatron is dragged into an abyss between the universes by Asriel and Mrs Coulter.
