Daemons

A soul made flesh, a constant companion, the visible truth of who you are.

In the multiverse of His Dark Materials, a daemon is the external physical manifestation of a human soul and inner self. These sentient companions appear as animals that reflect their owner's personality, mood, and current state of being, serving as constant confidants, protectors, and mirrors to the human psyche. Dæmons have human intelligence and are capable of human speech, whatever form they take. They are bound by an unbreakable bond; if separated beyond a certain distance, both parties suffer agonizing pain, and prolonged separation beyond this limit results in the death of both the human and the daemon. If the bond is severed by intercision after adolescence, the person becomes a lifeless shell; a child and dæmon severed this way will both eventually die.

Lore & Background

The existence of daemons is so intrinsic to human life in this universe that no one questions their reality. During adolescence the dæmon undergoes 'settling', permanently and involuntarily assuming the form of the animal the person most resembles in character. The bond between human and daemon is absolute. Typically a dæmon and its human are conscious or asleep at the same time, and when a dæmon is killed its human dies as well. Intercision is the severing of the bond between a human and their dæmon. It is practised by the General Oblation Board, known as the Gobblers, who abduct children and experiment on them at Bolvangar. Dæmons supposedly occur in every world, but only in Lyra's universe do they take an external shape; in Will's world they exist but are invisible. Dust is also what connects humans to their dæmons.

Reader's Guide

Daemons are the cornerstone of identity in the world of His Dark Materials. Every human is born with a daemon that acts as their soul given physical form. In childhood, these companions change shape constantly, mirroring the child's fluid personality and lack of fixed self. As children approach puberty, a profound transition occurs known as 'settling.'

The daemon ceases to shapeshift and takes on a single, permanent form that reflects the individual's true nature. Once settled, the form is permanent and reflects the person's mature personality. Separation causes immediate agony, and if forced apart for too long, both will perish. For a human to touch another person's dæmon is taboo, described as "the worst breach of etiquette imaginable".

The Church-funded General Oblation Board severs children from their dæmons by intercision; Mrs Coulter says it prevents the onset of troubling adult emotions. Will Parry's dæmon, previously internal, becomes visible after he passes through the world of the dead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do daemons change shape as humans grow older?

During childhood, they shift forms fluidly to match the child's changing interests and moods. However, once a person reaches adulthood, their daemon settles into one fixed animal form that represents their true nature.

Can you survive if your daemon is separated from you?

Being pulled apart beyond a certain distance causes agonizing pain for both the human and the animal. Given enough distance it results in death, although witches and shamans have gained the ability to separate from their dæmons.
