The conflict originates from Lord Asriel's discovery that The Authority is not the true creator but a dying entity who stole power. To oppose him, Asriel builds a bridge to another world in Northern Lights and assembles an army comprising witches, armoured bears, and scholars. Lyra Belacqua plays a pivotal role, prophesied by witches to act as Eve in a second fall that stops the loss of Dust. This occurs when she reaches maturity and begins attracting Dust naturally. The battle takes place on the plains where Asriel's forces engage the Authority's regent, Metatron. In the final moments, Lyra and Will Parry arrive, and together with their dæmons Pantalaimon and Kirjava, they witness the death of the false god. Asriel dies alongside Marisa Coulter while killing Metatron, ending the immediate threat but necessitating the separation of worlds to prevent further corruption.

In Their Own Story

The narrative arc begins in Northern Lights when Lyra leaves Jordan College with an alethiometer given by the Master. She travels to the far north and eventually across the multiverse to join her father's rebellion. Lord Asriel, described as having a fierce dark face and savage laughter, commands respect as he prepares for war against The Authority. Lyra searches for kidnapped friends and uncovers the truth about Dust while navigating threats from the Magisterium. In La Belle Sauvage, she is protected by nuns at the Priory of Saint Rosamund before being raised by Jordan College scholars. As the war escalates, Iorek Byrnison returns to Svalbard to reign as king after repairing the Subtle Knife and leading his subjects to fight on Asriel's side. The climax occurs when Lyra reaches maturity, fulfilling her role as Eve. Will Parry breaks the Subtle Knife, allowing them to find lost dæmons. Finally, Asriel and Marisa Coulter confront Metatron; they succeed in killing him but perish in the process, sealing the fate of the multiverse.
