John Parry was originally a Royal Marine who disappeared on an expedition to the Arctic when Will was one year old. He had entered another world through an anomaly in Alaska, which served as a window to Cittàgazze. Unable to find his way back, he eventually became known among the Tlingit people as Stanislaus Grumman. In this new life, he adopted the role of a shaman, gaining the ability to communicate with spirits and navigate between worlds through means other than technology. His existence in the multiverse was defined by a search for purpose after leaving his family behind, though he never forgot Elaine Parry or Will. His connection to the spiritual realm allowed him to serve as a guide for Lyra Belacqua, offering wisdom about Dust and the nature of death. However, his past actions left him vulnerable; a witch from his former life eventually tracked him down, bitter over a rejection she had suffered long ago.

In Their Own Story

The reunion between father and son was brief and heartbreaking. While Will lay on a mountain summit in Lyra's world, unable to sleep, he encountered the mysterious man who turned out to be John Parry. The man recognized Will as the bearer of the Subtle Knife and instructed him to take it to Lord Asriel. In that fleeting moment of recognition, Will realized this stranger was his father, a man he had never known. But before any reconciliation could occur, a witch arrived and killed Parry. This act was born of long-held resentment; she had once been rejected by the shaman in his life among the Tlingit. Will, furious at her actions, captured the witch and berated her for what she had done. The confrontation ended when the witch took her own life. Later, during the journey into the World of the Dead, Will encountered his father's ghost. Through this spectral meeting, Parry revealed crucial information: that Will and Lyra's dæmons were now in a world where Lord Asriel was waging war on the Authority.
