John Parry, a former Royal Marine who vanished during an expedition to the Arctic when his son was merely a baby, is a central figure whose fate bridges multiple worlds. Introduced in The Subtle Knife as a mysterious man encountered by Will on a mountain summit, he is revealed to be the boy's long-lost father. Having wandered into another world through an anomaly in Alaska, Parry was found by a local tribe who called him Jopari, became a shaman, and took the name Stanislaus Grumman. His journey ends tragically yet heroically when he recognizes his son, only to be killed by a witch who felt rejected by him years prior.

John Parry was originally a Royal Marine who disappeared on an expedition to the Arctic when Will was one year old. He had entered another world through an anomaly in Alaska, which served as a window to Cittàgazze. Unable to find his way back, he arrived in Lyra's world, where a local tribe called him Jopari and he later took the name Stanislaus Grumman. He joined the Yenisei tribe and underwent trepanation of his skull, becoming a shaman of the tribe. His existence in the multiverse was defined by a search for purpose after leaving his family behind, though he never forgot Elaine Parry or Will. However, his past actions left him vulnerable; a witch from his former life eventually tracked him down, bitter over a rejection she had suffered long ago.
