Mary Malone

The scientist who proved Dust is consciousness through the language of Shadows.

Mary Malone is a physicist and former nun from Will's world, our own, who researches dark matter in Oxford. Like everyone in her world she has a dæmon she cannot see; at the end of The Amber Spyglass Serafina Pekkala shows her how to see it, and it has the form of an alpine chough. Initially researching dark matter under the name "Shadows," she discovers these particles are identical to Dust.

Lore & Background

Mary's journey begins with her research into dark matter, which she refers to as "Shadows" or "Shadow particles." The name was given by her colleague Oliver Payne, referencing Plato's Allegory of the Cave and the "shadows on the wall." Through a computer program interfaced with a detector, Mary communicates directly with these particles. This dialogue confirms that Shadows are indeed Dust, the same substance known as Rusakov particles in Lyra's universe. Her work reveals that Dust is attracted to objects formed by consciousness, particularly those where consciousness has matured. In Lyra's world, this maturation occurs when a daemon fixes its shape; for the Mulefa, it happens when adolescents begin using wheels.

Reader's Guide

Her presence in the Mulefa world highlights the universality of Dust; while humans hide from it or fear it as original sin, the Mulefa see it clearly as "sraf." In the witches' prophecy involving Lyra she plays the part of the serpent to Lyra's Eve, and in the Mulefa's world she builds the amber spyglass that lets her see Dust.
