Mrs. Coulter
A figure of toxic malice who found love like a thief in the night.
Marisa Coulter (née Van Zee), known simply as Mrs. Coulter, is a character in Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy and one of the main antagonists of Northern Lights. Initially appearing as an elegant and cool-minded sophisticate with significant political connections within the Church's hierarchy, she is revealed to be the biological mother of Lyra Belacqua through a past love affair with Lord Asriel. By the third novel, The Amber Spyglass, she is described as 35 years old. While outwardly calculating, power-hungry, and ruthless, her character undergoes a profound transformation driven by maternal instincts that override her loyalty to the Magisterium.

Lore & Background
Mrs. Coulter is described as beautiful with sleek black hair that frames her cheeks, though later accounts mention blonde or golden hair. She authored an academic work titled 'The Bronze Clocks of Benin' referenced in Lyra's Oxford. Her dæmon takes the form of a golden monkey capable of separating unusually far from her, despite no known process enabling such distance. In The Northern Lights, she rescues Lyra from child-snatchers called the Gobblers and later saves her from intercision at Bolvangar, though she initially plans to kill Lyra in the second book to prevent the Fall.
By The Amber Spyglass, she is torn between her crimes and a sudden, overwhelming love for her daughter. Metatron, the Regent of the Authority, describes her as a 'cess-pit of moral filth' full of corruption, envy and lust for power, yet he describes her as lovelier than any wife he had and wishes to take her as his consort.
Reader's Guide
Mrs. Coulter represents a complex moral figure whose actions are driven by both self-interest and sudden, uncalculated love. Readers should note that while she is highly placed in the Church's hierarchy with a large degree of autonomy, her final act involves betraying the very institution she served. Her relationship with Lyra begins with fear and hatred from Lyra's side but evolves through repeated rescues by Coulter. Key moments include her initial deception regarding intercision, her drugging of Lyra in a cave at the start of The Amber Spyglass, and her ultimate decision to sacrifice herself. Her golden monkey dæmon can go much further from her than most dæmons can from their humans.
