Background
On an alternate Earth, a church called the Magisterium controls what people believe, and each person's soul lives outside them as an animal companion, a daemon. Lyra is an orphan raised at Jordan College with her daemon Pantalaimon, and her uncle is the explorer Lord Asriel.
The film was announced in February 2002, but arguments over the script and the choice of director caused long delays. Richards was cast as Lyra in June 2006, and filming began that September at Shepperton Studios, with location work in England, Switzerland and Norway.
It premiered in London on 27 November 2007. Reviews were mixed and it grossed $372 million on a $180 million budget, but it won Best Visual Effects at the 80th Academy Awards.
