The Amber Spyglass
The amber spyglass is the device that gives the third novel of His Dark Materials its title. The physicist Mary Malone builds it in the world of the mulefa, using lacquer from the sap of the trees there, and it allows her to see Dust. The novel's plot summary describes it as a device for viewing the form of consciousness known as Dust.
Reader's Guide
In Nicholas Wright's stage adaptation of the novels, the character of Mary Malone does not appear. There the witch Serafina Pekkala is the bearer of the spyglass, which in that version was created by Jopari (John Parry) as a device to view Dust.
