Prior to the trilogy's start, Asriel was a highly respected explorer and scholar whose "experimental theology" work secured him vast power, land, and money. His life shifted after an affair with Marisa Coulter produced Lyra; when Edward Coulter attacked Lyra intending harm, Asriel intervened and killed him. The Church stripped him of all property, and while six-month-old Lyra was sent to a convent, Asriel rescued her for Jordan College, raising her as his niece. His research into Dust led to a lecture at Jordan College featuring photograms of Dust, a city in the sky, and Stanislaus Grumman's severed head. Captured by the General Oblation Board and imprisoned in Svalbard by panserbjørne led by Iofur Raknison, he awaited a child for intercision to open a window into other universes. Roger Parslow arrived unwittingly, providing the energy needed. Asriel allied with rebel angels under Xaphania, built a basalt fortress in an empty world, and gathered armies from many worlds to wage war against the Kingdom of Heaven.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the jagged peaks where Lord Asriel's basalt fortress stood, his snow leopard dæmon Stelmaria pacing silently beside him. He had traveled to Svalbard only to be imprisoned by Iofur Raknison's bear warriors, ordered there by Marisa Coulter's General Oblation Board. There he waited for a child on whom to perform intercision, hoping the resulting energy would open a window in the aurora. When Roger Parslow arrived, unwittingly brought by Lyra, Asriel used him to breach the worlds. He entered Cittàgazze and allied with rebel angels under Xaphania. Later, his allies King Ogunwe and Lord Roke rescued Lyra from Mrs Coulter. Though they captured her, Lyra and Will escaped. Asriel attended to Mrs Coulter, trying to influence Lyra and Will who held the key to renewing Dust flow. He let Mrs Coulter escape in an 'Intention Craft' while Lord Roke followed her to gain information about a Church bomb targeting Lyra at Saint-Jean Les Eaux. Asriel destroyed this location with his craft just as the bomb detonated, creating a hole into the abyss. Standing on the edge of this chasm during the final battle against Metatron and the Authority's armies, Mrs Coulter tricked Metatron into attacking Asriel and taking Lyra's dæmon. Both Asriel and Coulter sacrificed themselves, falling into the abyss with Metatron to be condemned to fall for eternity.
