In Their Own Story

Before Lyra fled London, the Master of Jordan College gave her Lord Asriel's alethiometer, warning her to keep it hidden from Mrs. Coulter. When Lyra later joined the Gyptian army sailing north, Farder Coram recognized the device and taught her how to read its shifting hands. Using the alethiometer, Lyra received directions that led the group to Bolvangar, where the Gobblers conducted experiments on kidnapped children like Billy Costa and Roger Parslow. At the station, Lyra faced a critical choice: when her mother, Mrs. Coulter, demanded the device in exchange for saving her from intercision, Lyra instead handed over a sealed tin containing a venomous mechanical spy-fly. The fly stunned Mrs. Coulter, allowing Lyra to destroy the intercision machine and lead the children to safety.
