Roger Parslow

The kitchen boy whose death broke Lyra's heart and changed the multiverse.

Roger Parslow is a kitchen boy at Jordan College and Lyra Belacqua's closest childhood friend. He is introduced in Northern Lights as the youngest of the Parslow family, who had long been employed as masons for Jordan College. His abduction by the General Oblation Board—the "Gobblers"—sets Lyra on her journey to the far north. He is taken to the Gobblers' experimental centre at Bolvangar, where Lyra finds him and he assists her in helping the children escape. He goes on with her to Lord Asriel in Svalbard, where Asriel severs him from his dæmon Salcilia to create a bridge between worlds, killing him in the process. In The Amber Spyglass, Lyra finds his ghost in the land of the dead and apologises to him, and she and Will free him and all the other dead.

Roger Parslow was a young kitchen boy at Jordan College and Lyra's best friend during her early life there. Roger was kidnapped by the General Oblation Board, known as the Gobblers. Lyra's desperate pursuit of him led her to Bolvangar, where she witnessed the horror of intercision firsthand. At Bolvangar Roger was reunited with Lyra and assisted her in helping the children escape.

On Svalbard, Lord Asriel severed Roger from his dæmon, killing him and releasing enough energy to create an opening to a parallel universe. In The Amber Spyglass, Lyra descends into the world of the dead to find him. There, Roger's ghost is trapped, unable to move on. Lyra finds Roger's ghost and apologises, and Will cuts a window out of the world of the dead, allowing the ghosts to be released.

Lyra had unknowingly led Roger to his death, and the wish to find him again is what takes her into the world of the dead.
