Near Bolvangar, Lyra finds an abandoned child who has been cut from his dæmon—a procedure called intercision used by the Gobblers. After escaping with the Gyptians, she learns of Iorek's exile in Trollesund. There, he stands as a silent mountain of scarred muscle, ignored by fearful smiths until Lyra approaches him. "They say you are just a bear," she says softly. Iorek lowers his great head, his snout inches from hers, and rumbles, "I am Iorek Byrnison." With new armor forged in Trollesund using human metal, he joins the expedition to Svalbard. There, Lyra tricks Iofur Raknison into fighting him. The battle is fierce, but Iorek emerges victorious, killing the usurper and taking his place as king. This act restores the honor of the panserbjørne, proving that a soul is defined by choices, not species.
