Iorek Byrnison

Exiled by iron, crowned by truth: the bear who reclaimed his soul.

Iorek Byrnison is an armoured bear, or panserbjørne, who serves as a pivotal ally to Lyra Belacqua in Northern Lights. Once king of the armoured bears of Svalbard, he was exiled after killing another bear in a fight; his opponent had been drugged by Iofur Raknison so that he would not surrender. After his exile, the humans of an Arctic port town gave him spirits and stole his armour while he was drunk, and Lyra finds him in a destitute condition working in a scrap yard. She uses her alethiometer to help him retrieve his armour, and later arranges a fight between Iorek and Iofur for the throne, which Iorek wins. After Iofur's defeat Iorek is proclaimed king, and his first command is that the bears discard their pseudo-human trinkets and tear down Iofur's palace.

Northern Lights introduces the panserbjørne, whose culture revolves around armour that each bear makes for himself from sky-iron. This armor is not merely protective; it defines their identity as sentient beings distinct from ordinary beasts. In an Arctic port town humans deceived Iorek by giving him spirits and stole his armour while he was drunk, while Svalbard was under the rule of Iofur Raknison. The usurper had adopted human customs, claiming kingship through deception rather than combat.

Lyra meets Iorek in Trollesund while travelling north with the Gyptians, who have revealed that Asriel and Mrs Coulter are her parents. Iorek and his human aeronaut friend, Lee Scoresby, join the Gyptian expedition to rescue the abducted children. Lyra uses her alethiometer to locate Iorek's missing armour, enabling him later to challenge Iofur. The confrontation occurs at Svalbard, where Iorek defeats the false king, killing him and reclaiming his place as the rightful ruler.
