Lore & Background

In the universe of His Dark Materials, every human possesses a daemon that manifests as an animal companion representing their soul. Hester is the specific form taken by Lee Scoresby's soul: a jackrabbit. This contrasts with children's dæmons like Lyra's Pantalaimon, who can change shape before puberty. Hester is voiced by Cristela Alonzo across both Series 1 and Series 2. In the novels Hester is an arctic hare; the television adaptation makes her a jackrabbit. She accompanies Lee through his exploits, from his arrival in Trollesund to the world of Cittàgazze.
