Metatron

The Authority's regent, once the man Enoch, who grew more powerful than his master.

Metatron is the Regent of Heaven and the main antagonist of His Dark Materials. He was a human, Enoch, in biblical times, but was later transfigured into an angel. The Authority, the first angel, appointed him regent of the Kingdom of Heaven in his old age, and Metatron eventually grew more powerful than his master.

Lore & Background

As Regent, Metatron has implanted the monotheistic religions across the universes. He seeks to supplant the Authority, to destroy Lord Asriel and his army, and to kill Lyra Belacqua. The Authority is imprisoned in a crystal box and, during the final battle, is carried away from the Clouded Mountain on Metatron's orders. Baruch, one of the rebel angels who help Will Parry, was Enoch's brother when he was human.

Reader's Guide

In The Amber Spyglass, Mrs Coulter enters the Authority's citadel, tempts Metatron and then betrays him. She and Lord Asriel sacrifice their lives to drag Metatron into an abyss between the universes, so that he can never threaten Lyra again. In the television series Metatron is portrayed by Alex Hassell; in the audiobook of The Amber Spyglass he is voiced by Stephen Greif.
