The lore surrounding panserbjørne armor centers on the sacred tradition that a bear must fashion his own suit. This sky-iron, collected from meteorites that the bears discover on, or buried in, the ice, is described as being very durable. The only weapon known to cut through this metal with ease is the Subtle Knife. Iofur Raknison, a bear-king who emulated humans by drinking spirits, wearing expensive clothes and wanting a dæmon, tried to force the bears to become more human-like, to build palaces and universities, decorate their armour, and even acquire dæmons.

His gullibility is attributed to his failing to act like a bear. In their society, decorating one's armor with non-functional embellishments is an affront; they believe sky-iron is the only material suitable for such work. The struggle to maintain this tradition against human influence defines much of the conflict in Northern Lights, where Iorek eventually defeats Iofur and returns the bears to their authentic ways.
