Unlike standard weapons, it possesses two distinct edges: one capable of cutting any physical matter with ease, and another designed to divide subatomic particles. This unique duality allows the wielder to create subtle divisions in space, effectively forming portals between parallel universes.

Cittàgazze's reckless use of the technology to travel between worlds released Spectres, creatures that destroy adult souls while leaving children immune. This catastrophe rendered their world empty of adults long before Will arrived. The Subtle Knife was forged from the same alloy used for the guillotine at Bolvangar, a grim connection to the Church's experiments on children. In the narrative, Lord Boreal, alias Sir Charles Latrom, an ally of Mrs Coulter, had stolen Lyra's alethiometer and established a home in Will's world. Will eventually becomes the bearer of this tool, using it alongside Lyra to retrieve her lost device from Latrom's mansion.
