Beneath the smog-choked lower levels, where crime syndicates like the Black Dragon Society thrive and poverty is endemic, strict laws and orbital technology preserve vast pockets of wilderness—a luxury few can afford.

Earth's relationship with the rest of the solar system is a tense dance of dependency: it provides the food and cultural gravity that anchors humanity, yet demands loyalty and labor in return. The arrival of the Protomolecule shattered this fragile equilibrium, transforming Earth from a static home base into a volatile battlefield where the fate of the species hangs in the balance.

Reader's Guide

Earth serves as the gravitational anchor of human civilization in the Expanse universe. It is the seat of the United Nations, the governing body that attempts to maintain order across three distinct cultures: Earthlings, Martians, and Belters. The planet's role in the narrative is multifaceted; it acts as a sanctuary for those born with 1G gravity, a source of essential resources like water and grain, and a political battleground where the tensions between the inner planets come to a head.

For the characters, Earth represents both home and prison. It is a place of deep history and culture, but also one of crushing bureaucracy and inequality.
