Career
The writing duo known as James S. A. Corey came together in 2011 when fantasy novelist Daniel Abraham teamed up with Ty Franck, who had previously served as George R. R. Martin’s personal assistant. Their first joint effort was the science fiction novel Leviathan Wakes, released that same year, which kicked off their series The Expanse. That book earned nominations for both the Hugo Award for Best Novel and the Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel in 2012.
They followed up with a string of sequels: Caliban’s War in 2012, Abaddon’s Gate in 2013, Cibola Burn in 2014, Nemesis Games in 2015, Babylon’s Ashes in 2016, and Persepolis Rising in 2017. Abaddon’s Gate went on to win the Locus Award. Orbit Books eventually signed the pair to expand the series to nine books total. The eighth installment, Tiamat’s Wrath, came out on March 26, 2019.
The final novel, Leviathan Falls, was reported as delivered to the publisher on May 17, 2021, and hit shelves on November 30, 2021. The Expanse series itself was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Series in 2017 and took home the prize in 2020.
In between the full-length novels, the authors released shorter works set in the same universe. The first was a short story called The Butcher of Anderson Station: A Story of The Expanse, published as an eBook in October 2011. A 69-page novella, Gods of Risk, came out as an eBook in September 2012. Another short story, “Drive,” appeared in November 2012 within the anthology Edge of Infinity. The novella The Churn followed on April 29, 2014, with more novellas released afterward. All of these pieces take place in The Expanse setting.
