The opening of the Ring Gate fundamentally altered the trajectory of humanity within The Expanse. Hundreds of years after colonizing the Solar System, the discovery of a massive structure beyond Uranus changed everything. This event was precipitated by the crash of the station Eros into Venus and the subsequent investigation into the protomolecule. It revealed that humanity was not alone in its use of this alien technology, as a faction within the UN had been responsible for destroying ships like the Canterbury and Donnager. The gate's activation ended centuries of isolation, connecting the Sol system to a vast network of wormholes leading to habitable planets.

Lore & Background

The Ring Gate formed beyond Uranus after the protomolecule, an extra-solar bio-weapon discovered on Eros, activated its defenses. Following a Belter racing ship slingshotting through at high speed, the structure perceived humans as a threat and engaged defensive measures. Through Holden's interaction with a projection of Miller known as the Investigator, these defenses were shut down, convincing the protomolecule that humanity was not a danger. The gate revealed itself as part of a massive network leading to other planetary systems, each containing an earth-like planet.

This discovery disrupted the balance of power between the United Nations of Earth and Luna, the Martian Congressional Republic, and the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA). While Earthers demanded an exodus to solve overcrowding, terraforming efforts on Mars ground to a halt with the realization that naturally habitable worlds were now accessible.

The sequence of events began with the destruction of the Canterbury and Donnager by unknown stealth ships, leading Holden's crew to discover the biohazard on Eros. Miller's investigation into Julie Mao uncovered ties to the OPA and Protogen. After Eros crashed into Venus, a research ship sent to investigate was dismantled by the protomolecule. The Ring then formed beyond Uranus. The critical turning point occurred when a Belter racing ship slingshot through, activating defenses. Holden, aided by the Investigator (a projection of Miller), negotiated with the entity to shut down these defenses. This allowed for safe transit into 'ringspace,' where hundreds of habitable star systems became accessible via wormholes. The immediate result was a destabilization of the Solar System's politics, as the OPA reorganized under Drummer to control colonization and communication through the new gates.
