Marco Inaros

Marco Inaros is as a commander of the Free Navy, described as a radical branch of the Outer Planets Alliance (OPA). He is the father of Filip Inaros and Naomi Nagata's son.

Lore & Background

Marco's journey began in the shadows of the OPA, where he operated as a high-level enforcer and strategist for Fred Johnson. Unlike many who sought negotiation or gradual reform, Marco believed the Inner Planets viewed Belters as sub-human labor to be exploited indefinitely. With warships and stealth technology sold by Winston Duarte's rogue Martian group, he built the fleet known as the Free Navy. He launched a multi-pronged terror attack across the solar system, including stealth asteroids hurled at Earth that killed billions. Fed up with his tactics, Michio Pa, who had led the pirate fleet stealing from colony ships, betrayed him. The Coalition sent the right amount of mass through the Ring, timed so that Marco's ships disappeared as they entered it.

Reader's Guide

Marco Inaros is the primary antagonist of the later books in The Expanse series, representing the extreme end of Belter nationalism. He begins as a capable, albeit radical, OPA operative under Fred Johnson but breaks away to form the Free Navy after realizing that peaceful coexistence with the Inner Planets is impossible.
