The initial discovery occurred when a Belter racing ship slingshot through the Ring at high speed, triggering defensive mechanisms that threatened humanity until James Holden and the Investigator convinced the protomolecule that humans were not a threat. In Their Own Story

In Season 4, the Rocinante investigated a blockade violation on the exoplanet Ilus after Avasarala sent them through the Ring. The crew discovered ruins from the same civilization that built the Rings, where Holden reactivated an ancient structure with the Investigator's help, triggering cataclysmic events. By Season 5, Marco Inaros assembled a Belter fleet and formed the Free Navy to control these gates, attacking Earth with stealth-shielded asteroids. The conflict escalated in Season 6 when Holden and the Rocinante joined the Combined Fleet of Earth and Mars alongside Camina Drummer's forces to defeat the Free Navy. Their victory came at a strange cost: they antagonized an unknown alien presence while protecting the Inner Planets, leaving the fate of Ring Space in flux as humanity grappled with the consequences of opening these doors.
