The Well of Time
The Well of Time: the mystical source of the Sands that transforms the palace and its inhabitants.
The Well of Time is a central location in the Prince of Persia franchise, first introduced in the 2003 game Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. In the original 1989 Prince of Persia, the final destination is a room with a large hourglass, and the Prince must place the Dagger of Time into the hourglass, not into a 'Well of Time'.

Lore & Background
In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2003), the Vizier tricks the Prince into placing the Dagger of Time into the hourglass-like mechanism in the Well, which releases the Sands. The Sands turn living beings into sand monsters (the Sand Creatures), not into a grey, frozen stone state. The palace architecture becomes surreal due to time manipulation, not calcification. The Prince collects the Sands by defeating Sand Creatures and absorbing them into the Dagger of Time, then returns the Dagger to the Well to reverse the catastrophe.
Reader's Guide
In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the player must defeat Sand Creatures to absorb the Sands into the Dagger of Time, then return the Dagger to the Well of Time to reverse the catastrophe. The game does not require tracking down scattered vials of the Sands.
