The film follows Dastan, a street urchin adopted by King Sharaman. Fifteen years later, Dastan and his brothers capture Alamut, where Dastan obtains a sacred dagger. Princess Tamina attempts to kill Dastan to retrieve the dagger, which can rewind time. Dastan discovers his uncle Nizam orchestrated the king's murder and seeks to use the dagger to change history. Tamina reveals she is the guardian of the dagger, which can release the Sands of Time and destroy the world. Nizam steals the dagger and stabs Dastan, but Tamina sacrifices herself. Dastan rewinds time to the moment he found the dagger, exposes Nizam's treachery, and Nizam is killed by Tus. Dastan returns the dagger to Tamina as an engagement gift.

The film premiered in London on May 9, 2010, and was released theatrically in the United Kingdom on May 21 and the United States on May 28 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It received mixed reviews and grossed over $336.4 million on a production budget of $150–200 million. It was the highest-grossing video game film adaptation until surpassed by Warcraft in 2016.
